Komainu is a creature resembling a lion and is placed at the entrance of shrines and temples. It is believed to purify evil spirits and ward off malevolent forces. While stone statues are common, this particular one is crafted from joined pieces of wood, with glass eyes meticulously inserted into the eye sockets during a time-consuming production process.
